Stuttering Therapy
Therapy Approach
For Younger Children:
Therapy is primarily play-based, making it engaging and enjoyable for young children.
Parents are supported in learning to monitor stuttering and deliver therapy at home within familiar, everyday settings. Weekly sessions provide coaching and guidance to help integrate therapy into the child and family’s routine.
For Older Children, Teenagers, and Adults:
Therapy is guided by the individual’s goals, stuttering severity, and specific needs.
Sessions may focus on improving fluency, reducing avoidance behaviours, and building confidence in speaking situations.
Close attention is given to the social and emotional impacts of stuttering. Support is provided to help clients build self-advocacy skills and communicative confidence. Above all, therapy is delivered with sensitivity, encouragement, and a strong belief in each person’s right to communicate authentically.
Therapy Options
Some of the evidence-based treatments available include:
The Lidcombe Program
A behavioural treatment for early stuttering, typically for children under six. Parents are trained to provide feedback during structured conversations. Recommended by Speech Pathology Australia as the gold standard for early intervention.
The Oakville Program
A treatment for children who stutter, using a rhythmic speaking style called syllable-timed speech. The aim is to reduce or eliminate stuttering through regular practice and supportive feedback.
The Camperdown Program
A behavioural treatment for adolescents and adults who stutter. It teaches a fluency technique that is gradually shaped into natural speech, with a focus on real-life communication and long-term self-management.
Service Delivery Options
The service is primarily via Telepractice however sessions are available in-person at the Highett Community Neighbourhood Centre.
Research consistently shows that Telehealth services are just as effective as in-person therapy, providing greater flexibility and accessibility for individuals and families.
